On 6 May 2024, at the KinoPark Cinema, the EU Delegation jointly with the National Cinema Center of Armenia, organized a screening of the restored version of Sergei Parajanov’s Triptych: Kyiv Frescoes (1966), Hakob Hovnatanyan (1967), and Arabesques on the Pirosmani Theme (1985). This event was dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Parajanov and was aimed to pay tribute to the legendary filmmaker’s legacy, whose unique creations are part of Armenian and world heritage the event. It’s worth mentioning that Culture is a key area in EU-Armenia cooperation, and the EU supports showcasing the impressive Armenian creativity.
The ‘Tryptich’ by Parajanov is a restoration of three short films:
Kyiv Frescoes (1966), a collage piece, long suppressed by Soviet authorities, that Parajanov had assembled from camera tests for an unmade film about the aftermath of World War II in contemporary Kyiv.
Hakob Hovnatanyan (1967), which anticipates The Colour of Pomegranates (1969) in its montage of portrait paintings by the artist known as the “Raphael of Tiflis” and its complex score by the sound engineer Yuri Sayadyan, which mixes silence with music.
Arabesques on the Pirosmani Theme (1985), a portrait of Niko Pirosmani, the famous Georgian painter who has brought unseen energy into Georgian traditional painting.
